Primary Purpose
Monitor of program profitability and the pricing of existing and prospective MEDEX programs. This includes integrating and analyzing experience data from multiple data sources, and reporting of results at the program level. (“Program” as used herein means each separate class of members with a specific benefit program for a given client.)
Duties and Responsibilities
The position is very dynamic and the individual must be capable and knowledgeable in the areas of data integration and analysis, cost accounting, and product pricing in an insurance underwriting environment. The Group Underwriter will:
- Monitor & track program profitability and pricing of existing and future MEDEX programs
- Analyze prospect information provided by Sales; determine prospect acceptability, pricing & proposal terms, and issue proposals to Sales people.
- Accurately analyze prospect and client risk profile and develop rates
- Negotiate with the insurance carriers and vendors to obtain competitive rates and policy exceptions as needed.
- Promote discussion and resolution of customer pricing issues. Maintain, on a consistent basis, renewal and prospective account files
- Research and analyze contract issues
- Underwrite terms and conditions and establish pricing for new and renewal business for moderately complex accounts by gathering, reviewing and analyzing account information
- Develop, refine and maintain product/market pricing and rate models based on analysis of group's experience, industry and demographics and competitive information
- Gather and maintain accurate and updated competitive information
- Under general supervision, work on problems of diverse scope where analysis of data requires evaluation of identifiable factors.
- Integrate program revenue, commissions, utilization, expense and exposure data from across multiple systems.
- Analyze program data and determine & communicate renewal terms to Client Relations Managers. This includes providing appropriate supporting documentation.
- Recommend specific actions that will increase profitability based upon analysis
- Participate in sales presentations and client meetings in a supporting role, as appropriate.
- Lead system development projects including intense review and update to CRM system to assure that appropriate program data is appropriately collected to perform the functions of the position. This includes participation in testing and actual data conversion.

Job Qualifications
- Education: BS/BA degree with concentration in Finance or Risk Management preferred.
- Experience: Requires 5 to 7 years experience of group insurance underwriting and/or a combination of education and experience. Working knowledge of group underwriting philosophy and techniques as could be gained by five to ten years experience in a group underwriting or stop loss underwriting position.
- Required Skill: Strong track record of time management and efficiency is critical including organizing, multi-tasking, and prioritizing. Strong computer proficiency is required. Technology tools will be Excel, Access and SQL with Excel being primary. Exceptional documentation and risk analysis skills and be willing to contribute to staff development and training as needed.
